About Me

Dan’l does not refer to himself in the third person.

I want to write a book, and I am working up to it by writing this blog. I have written zero international best sellers, but I did coauthor a PC text adventure game called Earthly Delights.

I recently retired from software development. I started in 1978 after graduating Stanford University with a BS in Math. I did stints as an independent consultant, writing software ranging from PC device drivers to accounting packages. I have been an employee at Basic Four, FileNet (acquired by IBM after I left), Symantec (now Norton/LifeLock as well as part of BroadCom), and from December 2000 to June 2022, Tanner Research. Tanner EDA was acquired by Mentor Graphics, but the core team stayed together. Mentor Graphics was acquired by Siemens, but the core team stayed together. Then I left, after almost 44 years of writing software that people wanted to buy.

I don’t like to buy anything someone is trying to sell me. There will never be advertising on this site. I have nothing to sell you on this site, and if you happen to buy something you find through a link here, I will not get a cut. I will not sell your email address or any information I may inadvertently collect from you.

I have no ambition to build a personal brand, give motivational talks, or become any kind of celebrity. I am not a joiner, though I can work well in a team, and get along well with virtually everybody.

I am ecstatically married to Kathryn, and we live in southern California, with two dogs and a cat. I jump out of airplanes with my friends for fun, brew my own beer, and play mediocre guitar. I have three grown daughters who all graduated from college, and are independent and successful, and one grandson. Kathryn’s daughter Kim makes me a proud stepfather to a fantastic woman. Through Kim and her husband Ron, I am a proud grandfather to her children, who have just a few more years of school ahead.

I work continually on admitting my mistakes and learning from them. I believe I have turned many weaknesses into strengths. I am not here to tell you what to do, only what I do, that works for me.

I am not available to consult on software. I would love to hear from you if you want to ask me about anything I mention on this blog, or just want to comment.

Dan’l is tired of starting every sentence with “I.”
